January Reading Fluency

Seasonally fun and whimsical passages that allow students to practice fluency and comprehension in an interactive manner. These passages include fun seasonally themed ideas that make fluency fun!

Beginning and struggling readers need a lot of practice with fluency. Students often struggle with the transfer of phonics knowledge in reading texts. These pages give students an opportunity to be fluent readers by identifying key words and practicing the passage three times. By the end of the third read, generally students will have more fluency and flow! Students must also find and write the key words and demonstrate their comprehension by illustrating the text.

Each packet is given an approximate AR level and F&P level. This packet is aimed at first graders, but will work for struggling 2nd graders and advanced kindergartners.

This packet contains a collection of 20 passages that focus on key words. The key words chosen are words are compound words, sight words, R-controlled vowels, long vowels and seasonal tricky words. Passages use the key words in a repetitive manner. Each original passage is somewhat whimsical in nature to help hold the child’s attention. These passages can be used for skill practice, reading comprehension, fluency, intervention, cold reads, assessment, guided reading or sent home as homework.

1. Students practice the three key words

2. Students find and highlight the key words in the passage

3. Students practice fluency by reading the passage three times and coloring a star each time.

4. Students review the key words by writing them on the lines.

5. Students demonstrate comprehension by illustrating the story in the box.
