Phoneme isolation is knowing that a word is made up of a sequence of sounds and that the individual sounds in words can be differentiated from one another. How Can I Use ThIs For Phonemic Awareness In My Classroom?

  • Print and laminate the puzzle pieces for students to match the onset and the rime of the words. Great to figure out the sounds in each word!

  • Use the picture and word cards as matching games like “Memory” or “Go Fish”Print the animals with the open mouth and paste them onto a paper bag. Students take turns feeding the correct word or picture card to the animal.

  • Hand out a picture card to students to see if they can find a partner with the same beginning, middle, or ending sounds.

  • Use the cut and paste pages and color by code worksheets as a no-prep way to practice short vowel CVC words.
