Item description

This Pirate Roll and Cover ABC letter game is a fun and interactive way for students to work on upper and lowercase letter identification. Great for morning work, literacy centers, math stations, independent work time, individual small groups, rotations, or early finishers. Students work on fine motor skills, counting, and letter recognition with one activity.

Directions: Students roll a die, count the dots then cover that number of letters. They continue rolling until their paper is filled. There are also 5 of each letter case to trace for handwriting practice. Each letter mat has both upper and lower-case forms of the letter.

I would recommend printing the letter mats on colored card stock and laminating them to use year after year.

Plastic linking cubes, mini erasers, dough smash, or math counters can be used to cover the letters.

Occupational Therapy Tip: Use a multisensory approach when teaching letter identification and formation. Describe the steps of letter formation with words. Pull down, trace up, push across… Write in sand or shaving cream. Have students write their letters in the sky or on each other’s backs. Make letters with playdoh, noodles, wax sticks, or pipe cleaners… The sensory input of letter formation helps develop a motor memory for letter shapes in the brain.
