Item description

“Scarface” Al Capone is the most famous gangster in American history. Despite the glorification of organized crime figures of that period in modern television and film, in reality most of them, like Al Capone, were simply evil criminals, hoodlums, and murderers. This resource is an informational text and biography of Alphonse Gabriel Capone (1899-1947), examining the man and his actions including his childhood in Brooklyn, his rise to power in the Chicago gangs, the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929, his imprisonment for tax evasion in Alacatraz, and his death.
This resource was written for Grade 7-10 students and can be used in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, homework, test prep, assessment, sub work, centers, etc). Please see the Preview for an idea of the writing style and to review some of the assessment questions. A bonus crossword puzzle has been added for your early finishers or as an alternative assessment option.
This resource includes:
1) A 900-word informational passage titled “’Scarface’ Al Capone”. This passage is best used with grade 7-10 students who are studying 20th century American history and particularly the 1920s and 1930s.
2) A set of 29 questions, including comprehension and critical thinking. Questions can only be answered by a careful first reading and close re-reading of the passage and align with Common Core Informational Text Standards RI.3.8, RI.4.3, RH.6-8.8, and RI.6.4.
3) An additional crossword puzzle as extra work or an alternative form of assessment.
