Materials Needed: Sensory table or container filled with sensory material (rice, dried corn, birdseed, sand, dried beans, etc.) Add seasonal trinkets from a craft or dollar store for more interest.

Halloween Sensory Bin Unit with Recording Sheets


1] Candy Buckets – Counting Mats 0-20 – Choose, Count, Pick, Match, Dig, Find, Count, Color, Write – Choose a counting mat and count the number of candies. Pick a candy container number. If it matches, put it by the mat. If it doesn’t, try again. Dig around in the sensory bin for counters. Count them onto the mat, matching the number. Color the matching numbered candy on the coloring sheet. Write the number on the recording sheet. Repeat with another mat.

2] Ghosts – Counting 0-10 – Pick, Count, Pick, Match, Color, Trace or Write – Pick a ghost jar. Count the ghosts. Pick a ghost. If the number matches, pair it with the ghost jar. If it doesn’t, put the ghost back and pick another one. Color the matching numbered ghost on the coloring sheet. Trace the number on the tracing sheet OR write the number on the writing sheet on the matching letter ghost.

3] Candy Corn – Number Order 0-20 – Pick, Order, Color, Write – Pick a candy corn character. Look at the four numbers and determine the order using plastic numbers if necessary. Find the matching candy corn on a coloring sheet and color. Write the numbers in the correct order on a recording sheet.

4] Bubbling Cauldrons – Fine Motor Count and Color 1-10 or 1-20 – Pick, Tweeze, Transfer, Count, Color – Pick a cauldron number. Use tweezers to transfer that many bubbles (pompoms) on the cauldron. Color the bubble number on the coloring sheet.

5] Mummies – Shape Sorting – Pick, Identify, Dig, Find, Sort, Color – Pick a standing mummy. Identify the shape or shape word. Dig around for the matching shaped little mummies. Sort by the standing mummy. Color the matching shape the same color as the standing mummy.

6] Witchy Stuff – Fine Motor Color Sorting – Pick, Identify, Grasp, Transfer, Sort, Color, Write – Pick a witch. Identify the color. Use tongs to grasp the matching witch’s hats, potion bottles, and pompoms. Sort the items by the matching witch. Color the numbered potion bottle the same color. Write the color word.

7] Trick Or Treat Cats – Halloween Words – Pick, Identify, Pick, Read, Match, Color, Write – Pick a cat. Identify the picture. Pick a different cat. Read the word using the word mat if necessary. If they match, put them on the table. If they don’t, put one back and pick another one. Color the matching picture. Write the word. Repeat.

8] Candy Train – Letter Order – Pick, Link, Dig, Find, Match, Trace or Write – Pick lowercase train cars. Link them together with plastic links in alphabetical order. Dig for uppercase candies. Match uppercase to lowercase. Trace or write the letters in order on a follow up sheet.

9] Jack Stacks – Upper, Lower, Beg. Sounds Match – Pick, Match 3, Color, Write – Pick jack stacks and match 3. Color the matching jack-o-lantern. Write the letter.

10] Frank Faces – Visual Discrimination and Memory – Pick, Match, Color – Pick a monster. Pick another one. If they don’t match, replace them and try again. If they do match, leave them out of the bin and color the matching monster. Repeat with another pair until all matches are paired and colored.
