Hands-on activities with building blocks challenges for the win! Read the amazing picture book, Roses Are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink by Diane de Groat, and then enjoy a variety of activities aligned with the text and focused on STEM. Engage and motivate kids as we celebrate Valentine’s Day! Use for morning tubs, recess bins, STEAM/STEM time, and at-home or distance learning!

Enjoy 32 building blocks STEAM/STEM challenge task cards! (8 are specifically focused on the picture book, and the rest of the cards are Valentine’s Day themed.)

There are also 32 projectable challenge pages, with a corresponding blank written response planning page to use with any challenge, if you are looking to add a written planning component to your challenges. Additionally, there is one general reflection page to use as a follow up for any challenge.

So, how do you use this?

In our classroom, I printed the cards on card stock and then laminated. I punched a hole in the cards and put them on a binder ring so kids can flip through and choose the card they would like to try with a tub of building blocks we have in the classroom.

Another option is to project one challenge for the entire class to use at the same time, while using their own random assortment of building bricks. I like to set a timer.

A third way to use these challenges is to give kids the challenges you want them to work on in a small packet. A coversheet is provided for this option.

What materials should I have on hand?

Materials required: building bricks assortment for each child or small group of children working together. That’s it! You could even just pull out a tub of building blocks for the entire class to share. No need for individual materials unless that is what you want.
