This is an engaging creative project to complete with your students after reading chapter 15 of Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver.  This is a three part lesson that takes about 3-4 class periods to complete. First, students compare a scene from the novel to a scene from a play adaptation of The Giver as well as the movie adaptation. Students make connections between the strategies that Lowry and the directors use to create their scene. After, students write a structure paragraph response where they explain how each of the adaptations compare to Lowry’s scene. Included within the lesson are links to the film and play, as well as step-by-step instruction and sentence starters to support students through the process. After having completed the first two activities, then students create their own interpretation of Lowry’s scene using details from the text. Students love this part of the activity because they are given a lot of creative flexibility for how they wish to visually represent their scene. Included in the assignment are links to digital platforms to support students who would like to digitally represent their scene. Students also have the option to choose more traditional routes such as painting or drawing the scene. Make sure you have some art supplies for this lesson (markers, color pencils, crayons, paint, etc.).
