The origins of Memorial Day trace back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict that inflicted immense casualties on both sides. In 1868, General John A. Logan designated May 30th as Decoration Day, urging citizens to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. The date was chosen to honor all war dead, free from the associations of specific battles. Over time, Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day, extending its commemoration to include all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday, observed on the last Monday in May, providing a dedicated time for Americans to honor the sacrifices of those who served their country.
