Item description

In 1587 a small group of settlers landed on an island off the eastern coast of North America. This settlement would have been the first permanent English colony in the New World, had the settlers not disappeared in mysterious circumstances. The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island is one of the most-notorious mysteries in American history. The cryptic clues left at the abandoned settlement and the lack of any concrete evidence have made it the focus of wild speculation and theories for the past four hundred years. This historical passage is a teacher and student-friendly examination of this event and was written for use in Grades 4-6. It can be implemented in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, distance and independent learning, absence work, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc).

The “printable/no prep” resource includes:

1) An engaging 1100-word informational passage called “The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island.”

2) A total of 25 questions, including vocabulary, sequencing, fact and opinion, and inferential thinking. The questions require close reading and re-reading of the passage and align with Common Core Standards RI.3.8, RI.5.4, RI.6.7, and RH.6-8.8

3) An additional crossword puzzle for early finishers or to use as another form of assessment.

4) Answers to every question.
