Item description

The Story of Car Engineer Soichiro Honda is a memorable story that students will look forward to reading every day! Prepare for kids to beg to read another chapter! “Just one more!” Ideal for a read aloud, distance learning, independent work, literature circle, or homework with text-dependent questions ready to go for each chapter!

*Created for use with Collaborative Classroom Book Clubs.

Novel studies engage, motivate, and instantly hook students! Offer choice of text if possible, but certainly be able to differentiate the questions for each of your students with this novel study. There are more questions and activities than students could do – so pick and choose what is most appropriate for each student or guided reading group. Your students will have age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate response to text activities, while administrators will be impressed with your ability to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners! Plus, once you have novel studies or literature circles or book talk groups set, they will last you quite a while – front load the work and then have the time to enjoy reading and working with your students!

With 65 pages of student activities, you have everything you need to turn this novel into a mini unit of study for your students, while differentiating for individual student needs.

Each chapter has at least 1 page. On each page, there is a vocabulary word or term for students to show their understanding using a frayer model. Additionally, there is one short response question on each page. The short response question is geared toward state test prep – sentence starters are included as an additional scaffold, as well as a strategy for answering short response questions – RATTS (Restate the question, Answer the Question, Text Based Detail, Text Based Detail, Summary Statement) ****There are also versions of these pages with the RATTS scaffold removed.

There are also 5 pages of multiple choice questions. 20 questions total.

What’s included?

This is 65 pages of student pages for use with the novel. Each of the chapters has at least 1 short response comprehension question. This allows for easy differentiation. At the bottom of each page are suggestions for evidence statements for students to use to start their sentences while citing the text.

The supplemental pages (which can actually be used with ANY text) are available both with the border and without, for a print-friendly option.

There are multiple types of writing paper, including some with self reflection rubrics at the bottom. In addition, there are 24 comprehension activities that can be used with any text and any chapter. These include skills like summarizing, analyzing quotes, letter writing, and more. I have also included test prep poster pages. (genres, text structure, context clues, and text features)

There is a list of additional book activities.

Let’s DIFFERENTIATE!

There are so many ways to differentiate this text! I loved using it as a read aloud for my class. As a read aloud, you can still differentiate by giving individual students their own questions, depending on the skills they need to practice. It can also be used for novel studies independently or in guided reading groups.
