Item description

These two Valentine’s Day activities combine writing and art and give students opportunities to use their creativity in drawing and writing.

Resources included are:

Heart Tangles: A Zentangle Art Lesson – In this drawing activity, students use a series of continuous lines to create a line design that covers the entire page. Add a heart, color it in, and it’s done! Extend the activity as a comprehensive art lesson to address several elements of design, foster concentration and creativity, and/or teach composition layout and some basic color theory.

Valentine’s Day Draw and Write – These draw and write quick-write activities ask students to draw first before writing, so they are able to create visual details before putting their thoughts into words. Use these for literacy centers, independent work, or as prompts for whole class discussions. The writing prompts are open-ended enough to allow for students to be as creative as they like with their writing. Writing space is unlined to allow for all sizes of handwriting and a variety of grade levels.

Valentine’s Day Draw and Write includes nine draw and write subject prompts:
            • design and write a card
            • caring for others
            • being friends
            • a gift for someone
            • decorating hearts
            • the letters of LOVE
            • planning a party
            • someone who loves me
            • celebrating Valentine’s Day

Heart Tangles includes the following:

            • national visual arts standards information

            • a list of art concepts and skills addressed

            • list of materials needed

            • detailed steps for introducing the lesson

            • directions for art-making

            • ideas for extending the lesson and using it beyond Valentine’s Day

            • ideas for looking at and discussing art

            • a writing extension suggestion

            • art reflection worksheet

Listed grade levels are suggestions only; either of these resources can be simplified or made more complex to work for any elementary grade.

I am a retired elementary classroom teacher, a former art teacher, an artist and a writer. I have a Multiple Subjects credential, a Single Subject credential for Art and English, LDS/ESL certification, a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education with a Mathematics focus, and Montessori certification. I have worked with all elementary grades, and with special groups including ELL, GATE, and At-Risk students. Creating Art With Kids and Share2Learn lessons and resources are designed to foster student creativity, choice, and independence, and to encourage authentic art-making. Consideration is given to developmental appropriateness, differentiation possibilities, and teacher individuality. For this reason, directions are general, expectations are open-ended, and clip art on student pages is kept to a minimum.
