This A Christmas Carol unit plan has activities and assessments to enrich your reading of the novella.

Do you want choices in designing YOUR unit on Charles Dickens’ novel A Christmas Carol? Do you have enough copies of the book? This novel unit plan provides the entire text of the novel in digital editable format with close reading questions for students to highlight and annotate in Google Docs.

This novel unit on A Christmas Carol provides opportunities for you to choose the activities and assessments that are the best fit for your students. The page layouts are clean and uncluttered to ease anxious or distractible students.

Included in This Unit:

  1. Reading Options: Because every year is different, I have provided FOUR options for what your students may do while reading the novel. Some classes need more structure provided by the Close Reading Questions. Others need choice, so the Double Entry Journal or Daily Reading Log may serve their needs. Finally, I included the Reader Response Questions for Daily Journal Entries or Tickets out the Door for you to assess comprehension informally.
  2. Close Reading: In place of a class set of novels, assign the Google Docs™️ (editable) or Google Slides™️ (draggable–preventing students from accidentally deleting the text) chapter for independent or whole-class reading. The questions in the margin guide students through the text and provide opportunities to think critically about the text. The contextual vocabulary is boldfaced within the text so students will encounter the words in their reading as they learn them for the vocabulary squares and quizzes.
  3. Contextual Vocabulary: Students can define the words in the close reading of each stave/chapter. To understand the words fully, students complete vocabulary squares for in-depth word study. The quizzes are contextual and return students to the textual origin, reinforcing reading skills. Quizzes are available in Google Docs™️ for editing and Google Forms™️ to administer a self-grading assessment.
  4. Reading Quizzes: The quizzes focus on inference and analysis skills practiced in the close reading questions. Quizzes are available in Google Docs™️ for editing and Google Forms™️ to administer a self-grading assessment.
  5. Literary Analysis Charts and Guides: I have included 17 relevant literary analysis guides from which you may choose depending on your instructional and students’ needs. Because of the strong emphasis on character in this novel, there are six different analysis forms for character.
  6. Hyperlinks: Use the provided hyperlinks in this document (and at the bottom corner of each printable page) to make a copy of the resources to your Google Drive. Once you have your copies, you can modify them to fit your students’ needs. The close reading chapters, chapter quizzes, and vocabulary quizzes are fully editable.
  7. Final Test: The test is 50 multiple choice questions drawn from the 5 chapter quizzes. The test is in Google Forms™️ for you to administer a self-grading assessment.

Teacher Feedback on My Products:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0

A really great way to start the play. Students loved discussing the ideas

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0

Great anticipation guide questions! I had the kids answer them for homework and then in class I had them move to one side of the room or the other for “agree” or “disagree” and then they debated on each statement.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0

My students enjoyed the discussion that this activity allowed. They were extremely engaged. I will go back to it to finish when we read the end of the book.

This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
