Item description

This is a series of 3 lessons for Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete two close reading activities for scenes from Part 5, 1941 (pages 252-270). During the close reading activities, students analyze scenes in which Madame Manec and Etienne argue over their differing viewpoints about Madame Manec’s involvement in rebelling against the Germans. This is an exciting scene to analyze with studnets because students gain insight into what it would have been like to navigate how to respond to the war as differing perspectives about the war created a lot of turmoil amongst family members. Students trace the arguments of both Etienne and Madame Manec to analyze and determine who they believe has a more convincing argument. Afterwards, students craft a structured literary analysis paragraph where they prove their arguments using textual evidence. The structured paragraph can be used as a witting assessment in your classroom. It includes a detailed grading rubric. Within the witting doc. there is a paragraph outline with sentence starters to support students during the witting process. As well, the first two lessons lead students into the final witting assignment.

All documents were made on Google Docs., are editable to fit your classroom needs, and are compatible with Google Classroom. If you prefer students work by hand, you can print out the lesson as a packet and have students compete the work on a separate sheet of paper.
