Item description
This lesson was created for Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete a close reading assignment for a scene from Part 8, August 9 1944 (pages 388-389). This is the suspenseful scene where Werner and Volkheimer are trapped in the cellar due to the bombings and cannot figure out how to get out. Students closely analyze this scene to determine how Doerr uses literary devices to convey his message. Students focus on metaphors, similes, allusions, juxtaposition, and imagery.
The lesson includes a close reading passage, vocabulary practice from the passage, analysis questions, an answer key and rubric. Questions move beyond comprehension and instead provide students the opportunity to engage with the text in a very meaningful way. The included close reading is a highly engaging passage and will take 1-2 class periods to complete depending on your student population. This assignment can be assigned as a class assignment, homework, or it can function as a ready-to-teach sub plan.
