After water, what is most common drink in the world? It’s coffee, with 750 billion cups a year consumed worldwide and over 450 million cups gulped down every day in the United States. This informational passage details the history of coffee, beginning in Ethiopia in the 9th century and following the story up through the current “coffee culture” and Starbucks coffee houses of today. It also offers insight into the economic importance of coffee and the “nuts and bolts” of the coffee industry in a student-friendly article.
This Common Core-aligned text is teacher and student-friendly and written for use in Grades 5-8. It can be implemented in a number of ways by teachers (close reading, direct instruction in class, independent practice, absence work, homework, test prep, assessment, centers, etc).
