Item description

The Spiritual Works of Mercy help others with their spiritual needs while the The Corporal Works of Mercy are a guide to helping our neighbors with their physical needs. Together they form the basis for much of Catholic social teaching.

This resource contains both the original version and an updated version of this resource. Both versions include a presentation that explains the Spiritual Works of Mercy and provides opportunities for students to make a personal connection to the material.

Both versions include:

1. A guided presentation that explains the Spiritual Works of Mercy while providing opportunities for the students to participate in the presentation of the material.

2. A graphic organizer to record learning.

NOTE: The original version can be assigned to students to work on independently, while the newer version can not.

Both versions meet the following standards:

  1. SWBAT define the word “spiritual.”
  2. SWBAT explain the difference between the Corporal Works of Mercy and the Spiritual Works of Mercy.
  3. SWBAT explain why these seven actions makeup the Spiritual Works of Mercy.
  4. SWBAT identify that these are based in Scripture and given to us by Jesus.
  5. SWBAT list the Spiritual Works of Mercy.
  6. SWBAT explain how each one can be lived out

The Newer Version also meets the following:

1. SWBAT define the Communion of Saints

2. SWBAT explain why we pray for the dead.

(Note: According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, praying for others is both a Corporal and a Spiritual Work of Mercy and thus is included in both presentations.)
