What is included?

A 4×4 jigsaw puzzle in print and digital form

Tips on implementation

How does it work?

Students match sentences to their equivalents with object pronouns. For example: « Elle choisit la musique » is paired with « Elle la choisit. »

The sentences on this puzzle are present tense with one verb (Elle choisit la musique) or two verbs (J’aime écrire à mes cousins), le futur proche, or commands. There are four negatives. There is no passé composé.

This puzzle takes time and concentration to complete. For strong students, it is a great challenge. For weaker students, it could be overwhelming if they completed it individually in its entirety. Therefore, we put students in small groups to complete this.

Another modification would be to completely cut off one row or column for some students if you’re using the paper version or the smaller size digitally.

How is it formatted?

This puzzle is formatted as a PDF printable or as an activity in Google Slides™. You will receive a link in the download for the Google puzzle.

As a printable, we print, copy and cut this puzzle for students to move and match French words to the corresponding picture (thus, all in French). Students can work in groups, pairs, or individually. Once all words and pictures are matched, it will be a 4×4 puzzle.

Print the necessary number of puzzles. Cut on the lines and then put the 16 squares into an envelope or zipped bag. We recommend labeling each envelope/bag, so they are easy to access later, over and over again.

As a digital resource, we created various options of differentiation to meet all learners on devices, via distance learning, etc. Once you open the document in Google Slides™, you will receive a 2×2 & 3×2 puzzle with rotating pieces, a 2×2 & 3×2 puzzle without rotating pieces, a 4×4 puzzle without rotating pieces, an answer key with moveable pieces and an answer key as a single image.

Because of the nature of this as a digital resource, you will want to practice with each of the options so that you can assign the appropriate puzzle to the needs of your students.

Note: *this puzzle does not provide instant feedback to tell students if they are correct or not. They will need to verify with each other, you or an answer key.

Students will find that the methods for solving the puzzles are a bit different simply because of the nature of a printable and digital experience.

Sometimes we offer “un bonbon” to the first group who correctly completes the puzzle. We use the puzzle again before assessments as a way for students to practice yet another time. Our advanced students often enjoy going back to a puzzle like this; it boosts their confidence on how much they have learned and/or reminds them of what they may have forgotten.

How could I implement in class?

We recommend this puzzle after students have had ample time to practice with the grammar. For example, our lessons and practices would go in this order:

1. Introduce the grammar and practice activities

2. Practice with Digital Task Cards

3. Play Tic tac Toe Partner Game

4. And then this puzzle

However you implement this puzzle, your students will appreciate using their hands and working with others to practice grammar!
