Item description

This lesson was created for Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. Students complete a close reading activity for a scene from Part 5, August 1942 (pages 294-297). The included close reading is when Werner goes to visit the beloved Frederick and his mother after Fredrick’s brutal attack at Schulpforta. This is a powerful scene for teaching students empathy. In this scene, Werner must make sense of what has become of Frederick. Werner must come to terms with the fact that he has lost his friend to the incident.

a vocabulary practice to familiarize themselves with challenging words from the passage, and then students answer literary analysis questions about the scene. Students practice the skill of analyzing the following literary devices mood, imagery, metaphor and juxtaposition. They finish the assignment by completing a structured literary analysis paragraph where they analyze how Doerr uses juxtaposition to create his message. Students also reflect on why an author would include such a tragic event in their novel.

Analysis questions move beyond comprehension and instead provide students the opportunity to analyze for the deeper meaning. This assignment can be assigned as a classroom assignment, homework, or function as a ready to implement sub plan. This lesson will take 1-2 class periods to complete depending on your student population.

All documents were made on Google Docs., are editable to fit your classroom needs, and are compatible with Google Classroom. This assignment was intended to be completed digitally, but you can print this out as a packet and have students complete the questions on a separate sheet of paper if this better suits your classroom needs.
